Let there be (a giant) light and seal savers

The 8" desert Racing light from Trailtech came in the mail. This was a pretty easy item to install. First you need to remove the stock headlight, plastic and metal brackets. To get the brackets off you need to remove the forks, since i was pulling the forks off i decided to put on the seal savers that o ordered a while ago but hadn't gotten around to yet. the forks come off really easily; first remove the wheel the loosen the pinch bolts at the top and bottom of the triple tree and you are there. Don't for get to remove the brake caliper before you loosen the pinch bolts. I just rested the caliper on the front fender but if you were smart you would use some wire of something to hang it from the frame somewhere. here is a picture for comparison between the stock fork boots and the seal savers:

I think the sealsavers look cooler but i guess it's a personal preference thing.

Next up was the new light. I cut the wires from the stock headlight plug and then just kind of guessed which one was the ground and which were the hot lines. The Trailtech light doesn't have a low beam bulb so you only need one of the hot lines. I went with the high beam line so that i would know when the lamp was lit via the dash light. Two butt connectors and it was done. the light is attached to the bike with 4 pipe clamps that are supplied with the light from Trailtech. i cut a couple of pieces of thin rubber and put it between teh fork legs and the lamp housing. I doubt that they are necessary or if they will even do anything but it makes me feel better and i guess that is all that matters. So now the light is on the bike and it looks great and is amazingly bright. i will take come better pictures soon but here it is for now:

Super badass!
Now for the issues:
I hate thw way the back of the light is so unfinished looking. the front is a fancy adjustable tough looking housing but the back is just the bare back of the light. there was no weather proofing on the connections or anything. I wrapped the leads and the wires with electrical tape to give me some peace of mind but there has to be a better solution. also now that there is no plastic shroud all of the bike's wiring is on display. This is not pretty. i bundled it all back together and then wrapped that in plastic to make it more water proof but there has to be a better way. It was raining really hard today and i was a little concerned about how water proof my solution would be for the bike so i put a big plastic bag over the whole wiring mess. This does not look good but it did work and stayed put thru the ride in to work. I am going to take a look at another bike that has the same headlight as i do today and I'll see if i can steal any good ideas from that guy to use on mine.

Overall I really like the look and the brightness of the new trailtech light. I rode around the city last night and it is amazing. rather than having it shining forward it is mostly pointed down to the ground as i don't want to blind anyone or attract police attention. I need to find a better way to store the wires but other than that i am very happy.

Side note: i just ordered a Pin-lock visor for my Shoei helmet and i can't get over it. Amazing! i am so used to visors fogging up on me that i flip my visor up every time i come to a stop, but with this pin-lock it isn't necessary. if you have a Shoei and ride in the winter buy a pin-lock today.
